Our community is our greatest asset, and we believe our diversity is our strength. We are committed to cultivating a welcoming, globally diverse community of software users and developers, data analysts, researchers, and practitioners. Whether you’re a long-time contributor or just getting started, we are dedicated to ensuring this is a safe and supportive space for you. We are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and harassment-free experience for all.
We strive to foster a community grounded in shared values, a community where people feel comfortable exploring ideas, asking questions, and saying things like “I don’t understand” or “Why?”. We encourage everyone to assume good intent and recognise the competence of those they engage with. There are no foolish questions here.
Be thoughtful in both your words and actions. Make an active effort to recognise and respect the boundaries of those participating in various nutriverse activities.
Look out for one another. If you become aware of a potentially harmful situation, someone in distress, or a possible breach of this Code of Conduct (no matter how minor it may seem), please inform a member of the Code of Conduct Committee listed below.
We do not tolerate harassment in any form. Upholding our Code of Conduct means refraining from any demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behaviour or language, including but not limited to:
- Offensive remarks related to gender, gender identity or expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), nationality, native language, or choice of technology.
- Unwelcome commentary about a person’s lifestyle choices or practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, substance use, or employment.
- Persistent or intentional disruption of discussions, presentations, or events, including in online spaces.
- Intimidation or threats.
- Continuing one-on-one communication after being asked to stop.
- Unwanted photography or recording, including capturing or logging online activity for the purpose of harassment.
- Repeated or inappropriate social contact, such as assuming or requesting undue levels of intimacy.
- Physical contact without consent or after being asked to stop. In virtual settings, this includes simulated physical contact without consent (e.g., textual descriptions like “hug” or “backrub”, or emojis implying such contact).
- Stalking or following behaviour, including persistent unwanted direct messages, sending unsolicited images or malicious links, or monitoring someone’s online activity.
- Threats of violence or encouragement of self-harm or suicide.
- Sexual or discriminatory images, language, or jokes.
- Unwanted sexual attention, such as intrusive sexual questions, requests for sexual favours, or repeated requests for dates or contact information.
- Deliberately revealing (“outing”) any aspect of someone’s identity without their consent, except when necessary to protect individuals from intentional harm.
- Intentional mis-gendering or the use of a person’s former or rejected name.
- Sharing private communications without consent, including screenshots of private conversations or direct messages, even if the content itself is not harassing.
We place greater importance on the safety and well-being of marginalized individuals than on the comfort of those in positions of privilege. We will not pursue complaints based on:
- Claims of “reverse” discrimination, such as “reverse racism”, “reverse sexism”, or “cisphobia”.
- Clear and reasonable boundary-setting, including statements like “leave me alone”, “go away” or “I’m not discussing this with you”.
- Objections to someone’s tone when it does not feel agreeable or accommodating.
- Calling out racist, sexist, cissexist, or otherwise oppressive behaviour, language, or assumptions.
If someone engages in harassing conduct, the Committee will respond appropriately. Actions may include issuing a warning, removing the individual from an event or online space temporarily or permanently, or involving law enforcement when necessary.
This Code of Conduct applies to all people participating in the nutriverse community, including nutriverse core team and leadership. It applies to all modes of interaction online including GitHub project repositories, the nutriverse discussion forum, Zulip, Community Calls, and in person at nutriverse-hosted events or events officially endorsed by nutriverse, including social gatherings affiliated with the event.
Reporting Guidelines
The nutriverse Code of Conduct Committee includes Professor Proochista Ariana (independent community member) and Abdoul-Aziz Goza (nutriverse Executive Director).
If you experience or witness unacceptable behaviour, or have any other concerns, please submit a report to the Committee as soon as possible using this form. Alternatively, you may email conduct@nutriverse.io, which will go to the Committee members. You may also make a report directly to one member of the Committee by contacting them directly. If any member of the Committee has a conflict of interest with a report, they will be recused and will not have access to the content or process of the report follow-up. At an in-person nutriverse event, please reach out to anyone named as a member of that event-specific Code of Conduct Committee, or to venue staff or security who will be present throughout the event.
If you are planning to attend an upcoming event or join an online channel, and have concerns regarding another individual who may be present, please submit a report as described above. We will work with you to take precautions to ensure your comfort and safety. These precautions may include: providing an escort, preparing on-site event staff, and/or providing on-site contact cell phone numbers for immediate contact. In some cases, we may take action to prevent a harasser from attending the conference.
The Code of Conduct Committee will investigate and decide responses to reports with the aim of making a decision and implementing enforcement as soon as is reasonably possible. We are committed to transparency with our community while upholding the privacy of victims and people who report incidents. We will publish brief, anonymised summaries of incidents on the forum in a dedicated, read-only category, and will publish on the nutriverse blog an annual transparency report.
We welcome your feedback by email to conduct@nutriverse.io, and we thank you for working with us to make nutriverse a safe, enjoyable, friendly and enriching experience for everyone who participates.
